Fougères

Fougères is home to a truly magnificent medieval fortress steeped in history. In fact, it is the biggest medieval castle in Europe and very well preserved and maintained. This is an excellent excursion for unleashing a child’s imagination. The group leader will tell an animated tale regarding the history of the fortress with full involvement from the children.

Once inside the fortress, the children will be given a guided tour ( in French or English) of part of the fortress and then allowed to discover some of the secrets for themselves.

The town itself boasts the oldest belfry in Brittany plus plenty of souvenir shops and crêperies. Fougères Castle

Bayeux

Bayeux is a beautiful, old town and is a unique Normandy experience.

This excursion offers some excellent opportunities for experiencing French history. The cathedral, town and gardens are all worth a visit and of course there is the “must-see” and famous Bayeux Tapestry.

Usually visited on the way to or from the Château due to its proximity to the Caen ferry-crossing. Bayeux Tapestry

Le Mont Saint-Michel

The magnificent appearance of Le Mont Saint Michel cloaks the carefully guarded secrets and history that lie within. Its very walls and cobbled streets ooze atmosphere that belies the religious origins of this chunk of rock-turned ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’

The streets are said to be the inspiration for JK Rowling’s Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter books and films. Our Group Leaders will give some facts and stories on the coach to whet the appetite, before arriving, when they’ll give a guided tour around those historic and infamous walls.

This excursion is ideal for all age ranges: interesting and fun, dripping with history, and then a chance for souvenir shopping. The magnificent Mont St Michel leaves a lasting impression well after your return from your trip to France.

Ideally linked with a visit to St Malo, St Hilaire du Harcouet or Fougeres to form a full-day excursion. Le Mont Saint Michel

Arromanches

About half an hour drive from Bayeux, this is a pleasant seaside town with long sandy beaches and a clear view of the famous ‘Mulberry Harbour’. This town provides an interesting introduction to the Second World War with a choice of two museums: ‘Musée du Débarquement’ and the ’360 Degree Cinema’. 360 degree cinema

A visit to Arromanches should always be coupled with the short drive to Colleville-sur-Mer – the site of Omaha beach, made famous by the film “Saving Private Ryan” Musée du Débarquement

Arromanches and the Landing Beaches make an ideal extra visit for those on the Caen/Portsmouth crossing.

Saint Malo

The walled city by the Sea. A popular historical site, famous for its former population of seamen and pirates. The city is protected by gigantic walls, with the sea lapping up the sides. Within the walls lies the layout of an ancient city, with cobbled streets, high old French houses and a quaint French atmosphere.

Your Group Leader will bring the history of St Malo alive and again this excursion is perfect for all age groups.
